Picking an auspicious time of the day for a marriage or engagement ceremony, buying property, starting a new business, embarking on long distance travel or prior to undertaking any important venture is a part of the Indian tradition. The favorable placements planets at a time considered auspicious is said to attract good fortune and luck to the events conducted during this propitious time.
According to Vedic beliefs, the influence of certain planets is either auspicious or malefic. While Jupiter is generally considered to be benevolent, the influence of planets such as Mars and Saturn can be either favorable or unfavorable. The impact of the planet Rahu is believed to be unfavorable. In Vedic mythology, Rahu is depicted as a demon and represents the head of the dragon snake. Rahu stands for the human ego, the attitude someone adopts towards others and towards life, the desire to gamble, black magic, lust, brute force, violence, hidden treasure and darkness.
What is Rahu Kaal
Rahu Kaal is that time of the day which is governed by Rahu. It is known by different names. Rahu kalam and Rahu Kalaam are some of the other names used for this time period. Rahu Kaal occurs every day. This unfavorable time period lasts for around 90 minutes each day. Rahu kaal on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays are more significant that on the other days.
While the belief that this is an inauspicious time is widespread, this belief is deep-seated in South India. Starting any new enterprise during Rahu Kaal can lead to failure of the venture, hardships and ill-luck. It is commonly believed that anything that is misplaced during this time will never be found. Although it is inauspicious for new beginnings, an activity which has already been initiated can be continued during this time. Rahu kalaam is considered to be a lucky time period for conducting religious ceremonies undertaken to appease Rahu. Thus, it is a favorable time for Hawans or pujas dedicated to Rahu.
The time for Rahu Kaal changes every day and differs from city to city as it depends upon the sunrise. As the sunrise of Calcutta will be different from Delhi despite both cities being in India, the timing for Rahu Kaal for both cities will differ. The difference in time will not be huge but few minutes, but it will be much more for those living in other counties. Therefore if you are in US and you want to do some auspicious work. The Rahu kaal timing of India will not work. You will need to calculate the Rahu Kaal timing based upon the sunrise in your city.
Another aspect to be considered is the day of the week. That means that Rahu Kaal on each day of the week will fall on different timing. For example the Rahu Kaal on Monday will be different time than the Rahu Kaal on Friday.
How to Calculate Rahu Kaal
Each day is divided into eight segments, from sunrise to sunset. The time between sunrise and sunset is divided by eight to get the eight segments. The first of the eight segments is considered to be the most auspicious of times. Rahu Kaal never falls during this segment of the day. This segment is devoid of Rahu’s malefic influence.
On Mondays Rahu Kaal falls during the 2nd of the eight segments. On Tuesdays it is the 7th segment, Wednesdays in the 5th segment, Thursdays in the 6th segment, Fridays in the 4th segment, Saturdays in the 3rd segment and, on Sundays, in the eight segment. Rahu Kaal can also fall during the night. To calculate this time period, the time of sunset for that day until sunrise on the next day is taken into account and divided into segments.
Rahu Kaal / Rahu Kalam Time Calculation
If the Sunrise in your city is at 6:00 AM, the Rahu Kaal will fall at the following times.
Sunday – 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Monday – 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM
Tuesday – 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Wednesday – 12:00 Noon to 1:30 PM
Thursday – 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Friday – 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon
Saturday – 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Although Rahu Kaal casts an unlucky shadow on any new work undertaken during this time period, remedies exist that can mitigate the malefic impact of Rahu kaal. Chanting the mantra for Rahu and worshipping the goddess Durga can reduce the malefic influence of Rahu Kaal.
