Is marriage pre-destined according to scriptures? Or is it just free will? What does the shastras speak about this?

In Vedic astrology, marriage is mostly linked to your past karmas and is considered pre-destined. Your horoscope, especially the 7th house, its lord, Jupiter and Venus, can show details about when and whom you may marry. However, the Vedic scriptures also recognize the power of free will. While destiny may bring someone into your life, how that relationship grows or struggles often depends on your choices, efforts, and remedies. So, marriage is both fate and effort; destiny decides who enters your life, but free will shapes what you make of it.

      @ skibidirizzler,

There are 3 main types of karmas — Sanchita (the totality of karmas of all previous lives and those of this life till date), Prarabda (the part of sanchita granted to the individual to enjoy or suffer in this life) and Agami (the karmas that one is likely to perform in the future – this carries the freewill part too).

The Prarabda is again made of 3 components — Dhrida (Fixed and unchangeable), Adhrida (not fixed and having the freedom to be changed by Pariharas) and the third Dhridadhrida (neither fixed nor unfixed – it is midway and will occur based on environment and other karmas done so far by the individual). The third type of karma is more difficult to change and needs more rigorous remedial measures.

Depending on whether marriage is a Dhrida, Adhrida or Dhridadhrida karma in your chart, the event of marriage can be treated as pre-destined or otherwise. It is not an easy process to determine the type of karma from the horoscope and different persons follow different approaches.

As earlier mentioned, the process is involved and takes time and effort. Cannot be done on this forum, at least by me.
